New & Current Projects

Sika Foundation

The formation of the Central North Island Sika Foundation in 2016 was an H&H initiative to help facilitate a process of engagement with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Game Animal Council (GAC). One of the objectives of the CNISF is to increase the knowledge and understanding of the Sika herd for recreational hunters, which is something Hunters & Habitats strongly aligns with. H&H has a representative on the Committee, and actively supports and funds some of the Foundation’s conservation projects such as the Kaimanawa Whio Recovery Project.

COLFO Fair & Reasonable Campaign

COLFO, the The Council of Licenced Firearms Owners in New Zealand, launched their Fair & Reasonable campaign in response to the current and proposed law changes that are likely to be the most significant change to our rights and privileges in almost four decades. They recognised that they must hire experts and lawyers who are setting up systems to ensure that our efforts and communications are timely, effective and professional.  H&H has supported COLFO with their campaign from day one, by offering them space at the Sika Show to promote their cause, help raise funds, and by offering substantial financial support.

First Aid Courses

H&H is exploring opportunities to organise a range of events that are useful for members and all others with an interest in hunting, fishing, tramping, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities. Practical First Aid Training is one of these possibilities. It could be a First Aid Refresher or a course that is specifically designed for people who want to learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of shock, anaphylaxis, take care of wounds, and how to stop bleeding while out in the bush. It fits what H&H stands for as these important skills and techniques can help save lives.

We don’t all shoot with firearms. At times, your camera is a better choice. H&H is looking at organising workshops for amateur bush photographers so they can learn to take sharp, creative and close-up images in our forests and of our wildlife. Nothing is quite as photogenic as the New Zealand bush, but you need to know what you’re doing to take those epic shots, even if you only have your phone camera handy. Pick up the skills and tricks and learn from the professionals. H&H is also behind the Photographic Competition at the Sika Show, so get your entries in!

EPIRB & Radio

The Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and other GPS-enabled rescue beacons are used to alert search and rescue services in the event of an emergency. The technology around these devices is everchanging. How do you know which to take with you on your next backcountry adventure?
H&H is exploring the options to invite suppliers and experts for an educational get-together with members and other interested parties to explain the ins and outs of what’s available on the market today, and how it can help you in emergency situations.
